A member asked:

Tsh was 4.54. repeated 4 months later and now is 5.01 (lab range 0.45-4.50). any concern? dr wants to do low dose synthroid. only symptoms fatigue

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Numbers are numbers: Lab result numbers are just numbers, so one needs to see the whole picture. A TSH above 4 can mean a person's thyroid gland is having trouble producing enough thyroid hormone. Some patients have symptoms of low thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) with TSH values in the 3's and 4's... and need to take Synthroid medication. That is why a doctor's evaluation and care is helpful and necessary.
