Heart failure test: Bnp actually stands for brain natriuretic peptide, but it was named many years ago we have since learned that it actually comes from the heart and can be used to see how much stretch (strain) there is on the heart - usually this stretch is due to the heart not being able to keep up with the amount of blood it needs to pump. Great is < 125. Heart failure is >400 (& bnp can go very high).

BNP: Brain Natriuretic Peptide. In general terms BNP can be interpreted as follows. A normal BNP level makes the diagnosis of Heart Failure unlikely (rule out test) •A high BNP level makes the diagnosis of HF very likely (rule in or confirm test) •Intermediate values of BNP require careful interpretation, in light of patients age (consider age-adjusted cut-off values) and co-existing conditions.
