Different causes: Your period is just the shedding of the unused endometrial lining that occurs monthly. Bleeding during pregnancy could be several things from a threaten miscarriage (many reasons you bleed), placement of the placenta, or the worst outcome would be an ectopic pregnancy. The causes do change as you get further along in the pregnancy.
