Will miralax soften stool that is already hard, or does it only work on "new" stool?

Depends: some stool is so hard the miralx and fluid you drink will find it hard to penetrate. That stool needs to pass. Other, softer stool will become loosened by the miralax/water solution and become softer. If hard stool not passing could try mineral oil or enemas form below
