Not usually: It is a self limited virus that can make you feel really poor for several weeks but it will resolve. If there are other medical issues that your friend has they may be made worse by it or cause complications but likely not. The spleen can become enlarged and all contact sports and trauma should be avoided after the disease resolves but your friend can discuss this with the doctor.
