The most common: cause of a neck lump is an enlarged lymph node. Or, in the location you describe, an enlarged or swollen salivary gland. But the fact that it seems to be associated with pain in certain positions makes me wonder if you could just have a muscle strain with some associated inflammation and swelling. I think you can watch this for a few days, but if it persists >1 week, see your Doctor for evaluation

Size?: Is this a big swollen area of neck or a 1 or 2 cm cyst ?? A smaller mass could be a lymph node or cyst. A larger er swollen area could be a muscle etc. if a small focal area and not going away in a week or so get seen by a doctor
