Figure speech?: Depending on the force behind it, blunt trauma to the head may cause "swelling" due to leakage serum or blood from partially disrupted capillaries; you can reduce the swelling by immediate application of cold compress (ice); small swellings usually resolve in few days. 39 yrs ago you were a newborn and thus somebody must have told you the story as he/she "perceived it".
