A member asked:

5yr old son had grommets inserted both ears last week. he just blew his nose and i can hear a loud whistle nose coming from his left ear? normal??

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Expected: If you put grommets in the ear drum,it provides a link between the back of the throat and the outside that an intact eardrum would prevent. If he blows his nose, the pressure allows air to enter the Eustachian tube & escape through the grommet. I'd caution him not to blow hard.He can blow germs into his ear and trigger infection.
