Hallucinations from: Outside of your head are usually schizophrenic in nature. Hearing a voice inside your head can be either schizophrenic or dissociative in nature. One of the main differences between schizophrenia and a dissociative voice is that schizophrenic voices talk at you or about you where as in a dissociative disorder it is possible to carry a dialogue with the internal voice or voices. Schizophrenic voices do not typically show you anything. Dissociative voices however are capable of causing you to have visions that are consistent with the topic they are discussing. Also, in dissociative disorders there is amnesia. If you have significan periods of amnesia, you need to discuss this with your treating psychiatrist and request an evaluationfor a dissociative disorder. If you have a childhood history of sexual abuse, the diagnosis of a dissociative disorder becomes more likely. Best wishes.
