A member asked:

I am epileptic & switched from topamax to keppra in case i get pregnant. topamax has worked very well (1 year seizure free)can switching be dangerous ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Risk versus benefits: Always have to weigh the risk and benefits. Keppra, whenever monitored in UK/Ireland study showed an exceptionally low rate for major congenital malformations, while Topamax is FDA pregnancy category D. Can one guarantee that switching will not result in unexpected seizure? No, but safer for pregnancy.
