Lymph Nodes: Most swollen glands or lumps under the skin are not cause for concern. The glands (lymph nodes) on either side of the neck, under the jaw, or behind the ears commonly swell when you have a cold or sore throat. More serious infections may cause the glands to enlarge and become very firm and tender. If it gets bigger or you have fevers see a doctor. Try some ibuprofen in the meantime.

Tender lymph nodes: Sometimes lymph nodes can be easily felt, especially if they've enlarged after a recent infection of the ears or throat and can take several weeks to reduce in size.
