Pleuritis: Pain in the chest wall related to breathing is called pleurisy and can result from inflammation of the pleural membrane around your lungs. This can be seen with upper respiratory infections or viral/bacterial pneumonia, among other causes. Pain in the chest wall related to breathing can also be caused by an intercostal muscle strain (the muscles between your ribs). This can be caused by coughing.
