Arthritis: of first carpometacarpal joint is one of the most common causes of this, especially if you use the hand for work or have a known injury. Get a good thumb splint and apply heat and use Tylenol or topical Diclofenac. Good luck. An x-ray would establish the diagnosis, but it is a difficult problem to treat. Good luck!
