Possible scaphoid fx: With the pain you describe, you need a thorough orthopaedic evaluation to include specialized x-rays of the wrist to assess for a possible fracture, and specifically a fracture of the scaphoid. If you have pain at the base of the nail side of the thumb at the wrist with the thumb in a hitchhiker position ("snuff box tenderness") a scaphoid fracture needs to be ruled out
