A member asked:

Even after teeth completely fall out, does periodontal disease continue to infect the gums and bones?

Periodontal disease: If there are no teeth there is no periodontal disease. However you can still loose bone if there are no teeth. This is one reason why implants are recommended for patients with dentures.

Periodontal Disease: From the greek roots, "Peri" = around and "Donti' = tooth. Without teeth, there is no periodontitis. Bone, however, can still atrophy due to other factors.

No: Dr. Davantzis is correct, no teeth, no gum disease. That is until implants placed. If oral hygiene is compromised there is possibility of peri-implatitis, infection of the gum/bone surrounding the implant. So be sure to completely follow your Dentist's oral hygiene instructions.
