Paternal history key: I have evaluated hundreds of patients with deficits in focus and attention. Anxiety is the most common cause of distractibility. Do your father or brothers have ADD? It is often inherited. Did you have problems with learning in childhood due to distractibility? Surveys are available on line but neuropsychological testing is the way to distinguish between ADD and mental illness. You are not alone!

ASRS, work history,: family history, academic record including typical comments by teachers and family/spouse 's observations. The ASRS is available on-line and is public domain. It is not unusual to become symptomatic later when there is demand for more independent learning, heightened demands for amount learned per unit study. ADD is real, of biological cause, is as inherited as height,& has an excellent prognosis.

Specific ADD Tests: Your PCP will request a consult with a psychologist who woill run specific test to establish the diagnosis of ADD in adults . Your PCP may then prescribe the meds or refer you to a psychiatrist for further treatment.
