The most usual: salmonella pathogen is salmonella enterica, subtypes of which cause food poisoning. Salmonella typhimurium causes gastrointestinal symptoms when the bacteria is ingested typically from contamination from diseased poultry, hogs and cattle or fecal contamination from food handlers. So the mayonnaise/potato salad source would not be expected for this organism. Hope this is helpful:)
