Pulled muscle: It doesn't sound serious. Likely a pulled muscle from it being stiff. The redness of the skin is odd but could be from irritation of the skin if you touched it. Watch for any worsening of the skin and try to gently stretch your neck daily.

Strain: This is consistent with an acute strain of a neck muscle. Treatment would be cold applications for 48 hours followed by hot(not to hot) applications thereafter. If you can take them, medications like Advil or Aleve help pain and reduce associated inflammation. There may be severe pain on motion and wearing a soft cervical collar as needed helps. For spasm, muscle relaxant may be prescribed.
