I have a 5mm hypoechoic heterogeneous thyroid nodule, but it's causing me pain. should i have another ultrasound sooner than 3 months?

No: It is unlikely that a 5 mm module is causing pain. Currently recommended practice is to follow up annually for less than 1 cm (or 1.5 cm) nodules. More than that size biopsy.
