Scale and Polish: Good day; I've seen hygienists preform scaling more thoroughly than many dentists. Does the doctor- hygienist take their time, are the instruments sharp, does the practitioner examine the patient post operatively to evaluate the scaling and root planning? Less inflamation and bleeding. Hope I've been of help!

Because: Here in the US, the dentist is licensed to scale the teeth below the gum line and perform other periodontal procedures that the hygienist is neither trained nor licensed for. The dentists fees reflect this superior training and ability. If all you need is a hygiene appointment, the dentist will schedule it for you.
