A member asked:

Sedimentation rate of 18 for 8 yr old boy. threw up twice but no other symptoms. could 18 signify a major compromise or minor inflammation/illness. ?

Within margin of err: The old rule of thumb is this should be about 10+ the age in years or less in childhood. Sed rate is based on how fast blood cells fall into a pile in a thin tube after drawn. They find inflammation adds "heavy" particles to cells and they fall faster. The quoted number has no specific value in projecting a "bad" problem. If anything, it excludes many seroius ones.
