Different HPV types: The types of HPV that cause genital warts do not cause oral cancer. Among the 100+ strains of HPV, only one, HPV16, causes throat cancer. Most other oral cacners are not due to HPV of any type. The main prevention is regular examination, i.e. your regular dental visits. Despite all the news reports, throat cancer due to HPV remains rare, even in people with oral HPV or lots of oral sex.
