Physical exam: Lying and standing palpating of inguinal area, and cough or sneeze to see if a bulge is identified. Femoral hernias, nodes and other lumps are in the differential. Girdle may not help.

In most cases: Physical exam by a surgeon is all you need for accurate diagnosis of an inguinal hernia. In some cases, an ultrasound can provide more information. Panty girdle is probably not adequate support. Specially designed hernia truss is sometimes helpful, but surgery is best solution. Consult a surgeon for specific recommendation in your case.
