Clean it: with soap and water and keep an eye out for infection-redness,pain,drainage. Not likely you'll get an infection from this.

The best way to: prevent infection is thorough cleansing with soap & water ASAP after the injury which I sincerely hope you did. In the future I would recommend that you NOT swim in a river that is "not the cleanest of places." Fortunately, few water borne illnesses cause wound infections. Exceptions include e. Coli and some other bacteria & yeast that can also cause swimmer's ear.

If: the cut is shallow and the bleeding has stopped, place a sterile dressing with Neomycin/Polysporin ointment available at the drug store. Keep the bandage dry and change it daily. If the cut is deep, you should have a tetanus booster as well.
