What do they test for during an obgyn pelvic exam? pap smear and then they swab for something? do they check for non-std infections?

Ask your dr: A gyn exam may or may not include a pap test, std testing or other testing, depending on your symptoms and your situation. At age 24, your dr/clinic should routinely check for stds, but if you're at risk, ask for testing (gonorrhea, chlamydia, hiv, syphilis, hepatitis, trichomonad).Symptoms like a vaginal discharge may prompt testing for nonstd infections. Talk with your dr.

Not Usually!: Generally, the pap/pelvic exam is screening for cancers, specifically cervical cancer or precancerous abnormalities associated with hpv (a virus that can lead to cervical cancer). Also a mass on the ovaries (for ovarian cancer/tumors) may be felt with the bimanual exam. But, if you are concerned about certain infections, your doctor can do a swab or observe for yeast or bacterial vaginosis.

Some: The pap smear with ancillary testing is quite useful, not only in evaluating for cancerous and precancerous lesions, but there are also a variety of infections (both sexually and non-sexually transmitted) that can be identified in the pap smear (hpv, trich, herpes, bacterial vaginosis, candida, gonorrhea and chlamydia). However, not all infections can be seen in a pap smear.
