Oral pain meds such: as acetaminophen or ibuprofen will be most effective for pain control, but some children complain more of an itchy sensation, and cold compresses, topical lotions used for poison ivy such as Ivy Dry or Caladryl may help. If itch is a problem, then oral antihistamines such as Benadryl or Zyrtec can be helpful.
