Post nasal drip?: Post nasal drip can sometimes cause cough in the morning and at night. If he is unwell, losing weight, bringing up blood when he coughs, has fevers you should see a doctor immediately. Otherwise I would speak to your doctor about possible treatments and get him checked out.

Could be reflux: You need to take him to a doctor and have him evaluated for reflux. There are many reasons for cough but the kind that gets triggered when lying down is often from gastroesophageal reflux disease.
