Highly unusual: The areola has a modified epithelium similar to eyelids, lips, anus, and foreskin. Because of the extremely thin dermis it is very unusual to form a keloid in these areas which explains the extremely low rate of keloids with breast feeding and circumcisions, hemorrhoids, chapped lips, etc (fortunately). However hypertrophic scars can still form in these areas.

Keliod: In patients prone to developing them, a keloid will appear wherever there is a cut or break in the skin. It is a hyper-response to the normal healing process. If you are prone to keloid formation, you can talk to your physician about measures to reduce these formations in the future.
