Inflammation: The differential diagnosis (e.g. list of possibilities) is vast. Many times, such changes are reactive (e.g. irritation caused by inflammatory changes as the tissue heals from itching/scratching). However, depending on how long this has been going on, other--more sinister changes--can also be in the differential (e.g. Paget's disease). If supportive measures fail, get this checked out.
