A member asked:

When refering to sepsis at autopsy.... how does the pathologist source location of sepsis & how does the pathologist confirm death was from sepsis

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Cause of death: Sepsis is a mechanism of death and should not be listed on the death certificate. The cause of the sepsis should be listed as cause of death. We pathologists are very familiar with a bunch of cell and organ changes that indicates bacteria were rampaging in the bloodstream before death, but the real interest is in, "Why?"
