Not usually.: ECT is what you try after most everything else fails. To figure that out, you need to talk with all the other docs and look over your history. Plus, ECT does not work overnight. Usually it takes a few sessions, often more than that to improve mood. So, no it is not an emergency room tool.

While ECT treatment: in a particular patient may be expedited (due to severity of symptoms with lack of response to other treatment modalities) - it is not an emergency procedure. Each state has different laws that govern how ECT can be used. The providers would have to abide by their state law.
