Sudden cardiac death: SCD means a cardiac arrest which occurs shortly (usually defined as <1 hour) after the first symptom. Aborted SCD would mean that the cardiac arrest was treated, e.g. by defibrillation. Causes of SCD include acute myocardial infarction, ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation, and heart failure.

Used when own is bad: The heart has its own internal pacer. When it malfunctions a permanant pace can be placed to take over for the hearts own pacer when it fails.

The Heart: Cardiac translates literally to "heart, " and any place the term is seen, such a substitution generally works.
