Continuous : A muscle will typically contract and then relax. A "sustained" muscle contraction contracts, but the does not relax, making the contraction continual.

Shortening: When a muscle contracts, it basically shortens. In a skeletal muscle, the shortening of the muscles then pulls on a tendon causing motion to occur in an adjacent joint.
