Voluntary/involuntar: Muscle contraction is voluntary, like when you are picking something up off the table. Muscle spasms are involuntary, and often painful, as they happen wuickly and forcefully for no apparent reason, there are many causes of muscle spasms, if they happen to you often seek medical attention to determine the cause.
