Many things: Muscles contract or spasm for many reasons. In hot weather a perspiring athlete can get dehydrated and lose electrolytes causing cramps. That's why it's important to stay hydrated. Low potassium can cause cramps. Bananas are a good source of potassium. Other causes include poor blood circulation , insufficient stretching before exercise, magnesium or calcium deficiency, and certain medications.

Calf muscle contraction: If you are experiencing the cramping at night then this is likely due to compression of lumbar nerves coming from your lower back. You may want to change the position in which you sleep or possibly even the mattress you are sleeping on. Follow up with a neurologist to determine whether you have lumbar spine problems. Good luck
