Many things: Muscles contract or spasm for many reasons. In hot weather a perspiring athlete can get dehydrated and lose electrolytes causing cramps. That's why it's important to stay hydrated. Low potassium can cause cramps. Bananas are a good source of potassium. Other causes include poor blood circulation , insufficient stretching before exercise, magnesium or calcium deficiency, and certain medications.
