How commun is rheumatic fever from untreated strep throat? also, is it still possible to contract strep throat after having the tonsils removed?

Rare and yes: Rheumatic fever is very rare these days. The reasons for its lower frequency than in past years are not completely known. Accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment of group A streptococcal infections are only part of the explanation. Strep throat certainly can occur after tonsillectomy.
