Exam: See urgent care MD, rapid strep test, throat exam to rule out tonsillitis, throat culture if indicated. Soothing beverages and NSAIDs for symptomatic relief. If your friend had herpes the lip if you feel an outbreak coming you can get oral medicine, Valacyclovir 2 grams po twice and get refills for future outbreak if needed.Good luck.
