A 37-year-old female asked:

how long will it take for iron levels to reach 12 range if taking iron supplements and vit.c daily for over a week? iron was at 9.6 three weeks ago.

Long term Rx: You need to take iron for at least 6 months to replenish you iron stores. 12 is not high enough to be normal. Do not worry about repeating the test before 6 months. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless. Practice safe sex. Get HPV vaccine.

Is glucose balance supplement safe for pregnant women?

Dr. Aileen Caceres
Specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology
No: Glucose metabolism changes in pregnancy and a delicate balance is maintained by the placenta and your system. Women may experience glucose insensitivity or diabetes during pregnancy because you are not able to metabolize sugar as well. Be cautious of using supplements that may alter the way that you metabolize sugars as this may increase your risk of developing diabetes during your pregnancy.

Advertisements for coral calcium supplements appear to be everywhere. The ads claim that this calcium not only helps bones but also cures many other medical conditions. Is coral calcium better than any other kind?

No: This is an ad that was recycled a few years ago. The claims are grossly false. I believe the company was fined by the ftc for false advertising but has not resurfaced. There are many sources of calcium that are combined with magnesium and other minerals at any drug or health food store that are safe and effective.

Do I need to give vitamin d supplements to infants who are fed infant formula?

5 doctor answers9 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jessica Davis
Specializes in Family Medicine
No: Formula has added vitamin d. The recommended daily amount of vitamin d for infants is 400 iu daily. Infants drinking formula only should be meeting this requirement. If the baby is partially breastfed, a vitamin d supplement should be added to make sure they get 400 iu daily.

Are there any herbal supplements that can be ingested to prevent coronary artery disease?

4 doctor answers10 doctors weighed in
Dr. Pavel Conovalciuc
Family Medicine 23 years experience
Yes: Coronary artery disease is caused by a build up of cholesterol on the walls of coronary arteries. Decreasing cholesterol may help. There has been a lot of research done to see what supplements may be helpful, but i can tell you that their effect is modest if that. Garlic is one, flexseed, fiber supplements (benefiber) are some examples. Red rice yeast, although, popular may cause other problems.

Are there any herbal supplements that can be ingested to prevent high blood pressure?

Dr. Gregg Albers

Herbals for BP: A number of herbal, natural, substances and vitamins have been shown to lower elevated blood pressure, but not a lot. Serious high blood pressure may need medication. Exercise, diet changes, weight loss, salt restrictions will show some benefit. Garlic, coq10, folic acid, fish oil, and hawthorne have all shown small improvements in blood pressure.
