Sprain: if it is getting better you do not need to see a physician however I would try and anti-inflammatory such as a leave 400 mg once a day if this does not clear up completely In two. WEeks then see if physician to get a definitive diagnosis

Why are you waiting?: If your foot is bruised, swollen and hurting enough to inhibit your bearing weight, then you need to have your foot evaluated. Too much ice could have the opposite effect on improvement. If it seems as though there may be a more severe problem, there probably is. To remove all doubt, have your foot examined and minimize potential complications.

When it is severe it: is good to get an X-ray to rule out a fracture. A doctor may wrap it better than you, and offer you a shoe or a boot or even crutches….

Probably: You may need an X-ray to determine if you have a fracture (broken bone). Most often podiatrists are able to take X-rays in their office so you don't need to go to more than one place.

Sprains and strains: Still need to be evaluated. A sprain is a ligament injury and one needs to know whether this merits treatment, A strain is a muscle injury and the same applies. X-rays and exam also helming rule out fracture. Many times with negative X-ray we are told "its just a sprain" but many sprains need treatment, some surgical other long term immobilizations, get evaluated
