Phlebotomy phobia : Not unusual to be afraid , to get stuck , you have to over come this by talking , by watching , speaking to a phlebotomist who will give time, your blood work is needed test, general anesthesia almost never given for a trivial procedure , speak to your doctor you may have to seek additional help, phobias are psychological problems. Good luck.

General: Anesthesia although safe is not an acceptable way to do this. We rarely do for children with behavior disorders or down's children when labs are important enough to proceed this way and even then its usually sedation. Ask your doctor if you can have a mild oral sedative before the labs are drawn. You will need a driver then. Also placing topical anesthesia on the skin will numb it. Ask your md.

No: I understand you fears and concerns, but there is no way that an anesthetic will be performed to draw blood as there is too high of a risk for you. In any case most anesthetics in adults use an iv, and only rarely would other techniques be used. I would suggest you talk to a psychiatrist or psychologist to see if they have any suggestions to overcome this phobia. Your pcp might prescribe something.
