Need tests: The typical viral gastroenteritis usually doesn't last much longer than a week. You should have stool tests done to check for several bacteria and parasites that can cause diarrhea. If you have been on antibiotics just prior to the onset of diarrhea you should also be tested for C. difficile infection.
