Hi, i'm a 20yo woman with pcos. my only symptom is that i rarely get my period. my doctor is adamant that i need to take a progestin pill ten days each month to induce a period, even though i don't ever plan on getting pregnant. why?

Cancer: PCOS can increase the risk of uterine cancer because of higher natural estrogen levels. Progesterone counters the estrogen effects reducing those risks. I will go as much as withdraw bleeding with progesterone every 3 months with my patients. Speak with your doctor before you change how often you take your medications

Protect endometrium: Your doctor has probably concluded that your PCOS is associated with unopposed production of estrogens by your ovaries or adrenals. Taking a progestin pill periodically (monthly, every 3 months or every 6 months) should protect your endometrium from constant estrogen stimulation and reduce your risks of endometrial hyperplasia, polyploid tumors or endometrial cancer in the future.
