Iron malabsorption: Iron deficiency anemia once gastro-instestinal causes are rule out can be due to a diet devoid of iron, or can come from malabsorption. Excessive intake of ice can interfere with the absorption of iron. Loss of blood in the urines, or frequent blood donations also can cause iron deficiency anemia. A complete blood count and smear examination can rule other hematologic causes.

Keep looking: I am going to assume that labs confirm that iron deficiency is present. I agree with my teammate that iron malabsorption is likely. I trust no one is forcing a non-supplementing vegetarian diet on you. You also need to look for a second cause of anemia, including hemolytic and megaloblastic diseases.
