A member asked:

Sprain ankle how to bring down swelling? taking ibu 800 tid. how to tell if infection occurs? tell if condition is getting worse?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ice/elevate/compress: Applying ice for 20 minutes every waking hour, elevation/rest as well as a compressive bandage/strapping will help control swelling. An anti-inflammatory medication such Ibuprofen may also be helpful. If no wound has occurred, infection is very unlikely. If pain and swelling get worse or fall to resolve, see physician.
