Several causes: Chest pain on breathing is called pleuritic chest pain. A rib fracture or chest wall sprain/strain can cause this.Other causes include viral pleurisy, pneumonia, pneumothorax, pulmonary embolus with infarction, aortic dissection, SLE, metastatic cancer, uremia. If there is significant tenderness on pressing the rib cage it suggests a strain/ sprain or inflammation of chest wall. See Dr if persists
