Disc: Sounds like the cartlagenous disc in your joint is out of position. You may need an Occlusal Orthotic to attempt to recapture the disc. Arthroscopic ligament repair surgery may need to be considered. Testing needed to determine exact cause before deciding on appropriate treatment. So see your Dentist before problem becomes intractable.

Don't...: This will sound silly, but: If it hurts, don't do it. Overuse of your jaw joint (TMJ) will cause inflammation and pain; if you continue doing this, it will get worse. So... stop doing the thing(s) that hurt, take anti-inflammatories (maybe ibuprofen or similar), ice the sore area, and go see you dentist.

Give your jaw a rest: With early TMJ dysfunction, it may help to take ibuprofen or other antiinflammatory med for a few day, avoid yawning or chewing anything except very soft foods for a few days, do not chew gum or tobacco, and always take small bites instead of biting into a full sandwich or apple, etc. Your dentist can help assess if you have alignment problems, and may recommend a night mouth guard if you clench.
