Location,Location...: It really depends on location. Without a picture, giving advice is difficult. The problem could range from an ingrown toenail, ingrown hair, foreign body, insect bite and the list goes on. If there is pus in the tissue, then the puss must be drained. The build up of pus and fluid could be accounting for the firmness. A visit to your local surgery may be the best bet.
