Worth a try...: Actually, redness is a sign of inflammation, not necessarily infection. When pain is added to the mix, it is still inflamed but maybe becoming infected. The sure sign of infection is pus or drainage. There is no way of telling if antibiotics alone will be sufficient to solve your problem, but it's worth a try. Fixing the nail is a simple office procedure that minimally disrupts your life.
