Try injections: Even though you might feel somewhat comfortable taking the vicoden es, you would be way better served if you can actually treat the pathology and not just cover it up with the narcotics. I'm not talking surgery, but injections into the epidural space may reduce the pain down to where you can function with less or no pain and without the pills. You can build a resistance to the meds and then what?
