Endocrinologist: This is the specialist you should consult. Although there is a family hx of thyroid cancer, your risk is not that high. However you will more likely develop thyroid disease in the future and thus needs follow-up. Since even if you do get thyroid cancer, it often responds well to Rx and removal of thyroid is not without complications, the wait-and-see advice is the right one.
